Reasons You (and Your Mini) Will Love Miniware

When we became parents, we wanted to find safe, natural dishes for our baby, something durable but also easy to clean. There wasn’t anything that met our needs or the needs of our growing child on the current market. We created Miniware to address the challenges facing parents and babies during self-feeding training and to have a low-impact, environmentally-safe product that was good for the earth from creation through disposal. Our Miniware family of health-conscious, modern parents love our dishes and we know you will too.

Why You’ll Love Miniware:

Safer for baby. Plastic baby dishes can leach toxic chemicals into food over time or when exposed to heat, such as in the microwave or dishwasher. Plastic-free Miniware is made from 100% all-natural materials without chemical additives. Perfect for health-conscious parents!

Long-lasting and durable. Baby dishes must stand up to the demands of even the most enthusiastic little diners. Ceramic dishes may be beautiful but there’s always a risk of chips or shattering. Plasticware can be durable but risks chemical leaching or plastic chips getting into food. Miniware is made from extremely strong plant fibers, molded into beautiful, sturdy dishware that can last for years with proper care. Great for indoor or outdoor use!

Easy to clean. Modern families require easy-to-clean dishware for busy lifestyles. Miniware can safely be placed in the dishwasher or hand-washed. For best results and to extend the life of your dishes, use the lowest dishwasher settings and avoid heated air-dry cycles.

Designed to help children learn to self-feed. The “easy-scoop” angle and wide openings of our dishes were created to help new self-feeders easily learn to scoop and grab different types of food. Combined with our Miniware cutlery sets, babies and small children will master self-feeding easily while developing their muscle control and balance.

Convenient and travel-ready. Miniware is ready to pack up and go wherever life takes you.

Low-impact and earth-friendly. Miniware is created from all-natural, sustainable resources with no chemicals used in manufacturing making it environmentally friendly from its creation through disposal. They’re a great alternative to plastic baby dishes which carry both environmental and health risks.

Miniware Baby Products are Free of Melamine and Formaldehyde

As you may have read in newspapers and seen on TV, The Swedish Food Agency in Sweden has gone out with a warning that most of the bamboo products on the market are mixed with different types of plastics and formaldehyde that are harmful to children. Furthermore, the SFA warned consumers to be extra careful of any organic products which are infused with petroleum plastics. You can see the full article on The Swedish Food Agency website.

This is often done because bamboo fibers are easier to break and biodegrade, and the mass manufacturers want a quick and cheap way to make the product stronger so they mix in plastics which are harmful and not eco-friendly.

We at Miniware distanced ourselves from this way of producing products right from the start and have instead led the development of petroleum plastic-free and chemical-free organic products. This is despite the significantly more expensive manufacturing cost that this entailed. Our persistence to stay true to the origin is to make sure Miniware can offer the best and safest products for babies. We are sure that parents around the world appreciate and understand the seriousness of this, including the additional cost that can come with better and safer products for children.

We can proudly say that we are one of the few players in the market that manufactures our products with only natural materials completely free of melamine, plastic, parabens, and formaldehyde. You can see how many warnings and guides we have drafted for years helping to educate our clients to stay healthy and practice true Eco-living, and below are a few of those articles published over the past 3 years:

We take great care in using materials with a low-impact on the environment and that are safe and healthy for the little ones to use every day, and this with no exception.

Our PLA is strengthened to support everyday modern family life with durable products. It is dishwasher safe, microwave safe, and much less brittle compared to most plant-based materials. Additionally, no toxins or heavy metals are leached into the environment. We constantly strive to be environmentally friendly in all our production stages as much as possible and always attempt to achieve even more sustainable alternatives.

Our suppliers meet both FDA (U.S. Federal Department of Agriculture) and LFGB (German food contact grade testing) standards. All finished products are tested to ensure the production process doesn’t contain any heavy metals or chemical additives.

We at Miniware will continue to work with and lead the development of safer and toxic-free products for children as this is our basic philosophy and why we are in the market. This is the time for you to take action as an important platform within the mother and baby market! Please feel free to contact us if you have further questions about this subject.

5 Things to Know Before Buying Organic Baby Products

Not All Organic Baby Products Are Made The Same

Like many concerned parents, we are trying our best to raise our kids in a happy, healthy environment. Many products are on the market today claiming to be eco-friendly and non-toxic for babies. It can be a challenge choosing which ones to pick.

We’re happy to see plant-based products are gaining popularity. Compared to wood and even carved bamboo dishes, the plant fiber is more adaptable and easier to use and clean. Still, it can be confusing to know which plant-based baby products are best with so many options available.

How do you as a customer know that the products are safe to buy?

Below is a two-step guide to evaluating plant-based fiber tableware to help you select products that truly are healthy, non-toxic and functional for baby.

Step One: Ensure the fiber is not infused with plastic.

We don’t recommend products that infuse plastic with natural compounds. They carry the same toxin concerns as regular plastic products in terms of leaching chemicals into food. Additionally, these types of products can’t be recycled because of the combination of two materials types. Many infused products claim to be biodegradable but that’s not entirely true. The natural fibers may be biodegradable but the small plastic particles will last forever in our water and landfills contributing to a growing micro-plastic problem in the environment.

The most commonly infused bamboo products are infused with PP or food-grade melamine. The FDA states that the chemicals in melamine will not migrate or transfer into food products as long the food is not heated to 70 degrees or higher. This can be a cause for concern if you reheat the soup, puree, or other cooked foods in the microwave. Toxins can also transfer through contact with boiling hot food or even due to a food’s acidity or oil content of the food! The toxins in melamine can directly affect the baby’s inner organs, especially kidney function. It’s best not to take such risks with your child’s health!

Here’s how you can tell which plant-based products are likely infused with plastic:

  • Flexibility – Bamboo fiber and natural resin binders are non-flexible compounds. If you find a bamboo product that’s flexible (such as clip-on products) and unbreakable (won’t crack under impact like dropping from a height or pressed by a heavyweight), this means it has materials infused, usually plastic.
  • Weight – Plant-based products are usually thicker and denser than plastic or plastic-infused products, especially plates that are made to last. High-quality natural plant-based products can typically last 3 to 4 years with regular use. If you find lightweight plant-based plate that boast extended product life, you can be sure they’re likely infused with a plastic material like melamine.
  • Price – Traditional heat-press processing for plant-based fiber is slower than that of plastic or plastic injection methods which results in a higher production cost. Heat-pressing combines compounds like bamboo powder, plant fibers, and natural dyes through the application of pressure and heat, a natural process that’s free from chemical additives. This process also results in defects in some products like bumps or uneven coloring which requires them to be remade. Plastic products are created by filling a mold with a mixture of chemical dyes and plastic then popping out copies of the exact same product, a much faster, cheaper, and more toxic process.

You can’t tell whether a plant-based product is 100% natural by price alone but factored into the other considerations, it can be a tip-off.

Step Two: Check that the product is designed specifically for children.

Children’s dishware differs from adult dishes in several ways and not just in size. Children are constantly growing and developing new skills, so a good bamboo child’s set will have features to help them learn.

You can identify a child-friendly design by these important points:

  • Ergonomics – Your baby needs help to learn and master eating skills. A good design will help kids enjoy learning how to self-feed instead of feeling frustrated during mealtime. A stable dish is a big help, so always look for dishes that will remain in place, like our Miniware plates and bowls with removable suction feet which prevent knock-over spills and accidents.

Size is also important. Many baby tableware sets are very cute and small but those don’t help your baby learn to feed themselves! Small children actually need more feeding space and chunky, round-handled utensils to practice scooping and spearing foods properly.

  • Longevity and Versatility – Kids grow fast, especially in their first 5 years. You want dishware that can support your kids throughout these growth stages. Tiny spoons and little bowls that can only be used for three months is not only wasteful but not budget-friendly either.

We suggest looking for designs that are properly sized with interchangeable accessories that can grow with your kids. Also, look for dishes that are useful in many scenarios. A cup that can act as a small bowl? Great! A bowl with a lid you can use as storage? Even better! Keep in mind, your baby will crave different foods as they grow up, buy dishes, and tableware that isn’t designed for a single function and can be used with all types of food.

If you’re looking for award-winning designs and non-toxic children’s dishware, Miniware is a good place to start exploring the world of safe, eco-friendly, natural dishware for your kiddos.

Eco-Friendly Baby Products Help Ease the Transition into New Parenthood

Of course, having a new baby is a cherished time, however, a new schedule is a struggle following the wonderful feeling of being a new parent! It sure would be nice if life slowed down when you welcome a new baby, but that’s not usually how it goes! Instead, life can steamroll parents who already have hectic schedules by introducing them to the spontaneous, ever-evolving needs of the baby! Not to mention the guilty feeling when we toss away numerous amounts of one-time-use products, But before feeling panic, there are some parents like us, who put effort into making smart nursing tools for you.

While we can’t help with all new parent problems like lack of sleep or too few hours in the day, we designed Miniware products to help us when we became new parents. When our son Astor was born, there were no products on the market that met our needs as environmentally concerned parents. Too many baby products were single-use, had a short lifespan or were made using potentially toxic methods and materials. It was important to us that we have a safe, sustainable, and beautiful baby tableware designed specifically to support healthy milestone development.

How to Choose Smart Design, Sustainable Baby Products
When making a new purchase, take a moment to consider whether the baby products you’re buying will meet your family’s needs over the long term.

Choose easy to clean products. New babies mean lots of extra cleaning; housekeeping, laundry, and dishes! Skip anything that requires handwashing and opt instead for natural materials that can handle temperature fluctuations. Miniware’s products are made from 100% food grade silicone and plant-based materials that can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher. Not just tableware but deluxe bibs too!

Opt for multi-use products. Life with a new baby is always changing, so purchasing products that have multiple uses is a smart idea. Can a baby food container function as something else when the baby becomes toddler? Can a product transform from one phase to the other? Miniware put a lot of thought into designing our products to adapt as different solutions you need based on the baby’s age. For example, our GrowBento box comes with silipods which can start as perfect frozen baby food storage and soon doubles as a clever to-go container for dining out or picnics. Silipods are adaptable for safely storing, heating or freezing meals or leftovers. Our most beloved 1-2-3 Sip! is another perfect example of how we easily support different stages of baby learning to sip water with cleverly designed accessories. Just remember to ask yourself, “can I use this product in more than one situation?”Look for a long lifespan. Long lasting, durable products just make sense when you’re juggling a new parenting routine. Instead of baby products your kid will outgrow quickly, choose products that grow with your child. Tiny baby dishes won’t last long once your baby is a “big kid” and learning to self-feed!

We designed Miniware specifically for self-feeding training, but our products work for everything from purees to finger foods and cutlery. Smart features like angled sides for easy scooping and extra space for pinching/grabbing support your baby’s natural self-feeding milestones.

Support baby’s health and the planet with sustainable, natural products. Miniware’s products are plant-based and made from sustainable materials, not toxic starch . Not only does this protect your baby’s delicate growing body and brain, but it helps us leave a lasting legacy of sustainability for the children who will inherit our planet!

Bioplastics and the Advantages of PLA for Eco-Friendly Baby Products

At Miniware, it’s important that we’re as kind to the earth as we are to our kids. Non-toxic materials, smart design and earth-friendly practices are the principles we follow when it comes to crafting our premium baby tableware line. In the past, we’ve introduced bamboo fiber, 304 stainless steel, and food-grade silicone to our baby products to support a healthy, eco-parenting lifestyle. We have now introduced our strengthened PLA into our Miniware family.

People have been using PLA in the USA for many years, but production has mainly focused on the replacement of disposable, one-time-use products such as food packages, cold beverage cups, and trash bags. Early generations of PLA were vulnerable to the heat. It softened at temperatures of 125F or higher. Advancements in PLA technology have led to big improvements in the strength, durability, and earth-friendliness of bioplastic products and as we strive to use the best technology available to us at the time, a switch to PLA just made sense.

At Miniware, we believe multiple usage products are always better than disposable. When it comes to the manufacturing process, the advantages of PLA are many. Here are our top 5 reasons for making the switch to PLA:

1. Renewability: PLA is not only reusable but most importantly it’s made from renewable materials. By replacing “fossil carbon” with “renewable carbon” we can help mitigate climate change by minimizing the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle. Early PLA was created from industrial corn, but the new generation of PLA products can be made with a wide array of crops. We’ve selected cassava as the primary material for our Miniware line because of its lower environmental impact, quick growing time and ability to grow in a wide range of conditions.

2. No Toxins Required: A major drawback of petroleum plastic products is the need for toxic additives during their creation. These chemicals, such as in the case of BPA, can have a lasting impact on our bodies, brains and overall health. Therefore it’s critical to use safe materials when constructing products for children whose bodies and brains are still developing. Bioplastics have fewer problems when it comes to food safety, however, some production processes or chemical color dyes can add toxins into PLA, so ultimately, it’s up to the manufacturer to ensure that the products created are truly toxin-free and safe for food. With Miniware you can rest assured that all our products are natural and free of harmful chemicals as our products meet the standards of leading safety organizations including the FDA and Germany’s LFGB.

 3. Decomposable and No End-of-Life Secondary Pollution: Bioplastic earth friendliness surpasses petroleum plastic as it’s not only created from renewable materials but is also biodegradable when exposed to direct sunlight and high humidity, such as landfill conditions. While PLA can be recycled, there are no current programs in place here in the US or abroad. The sad truth is that many plastic products cannot or will not be recycled. With China’s recent restrictions on accepting mixed recycling waste from the USA, many recycling programs have ground to a halt. In our effort to create products with minimum impact on the environment from creation through its end-of-life, it’s important not to solely rely on recycling measures, but to create products with a healthier afterlife overall. Although PLA can take up to 12 months to decompose, it’s still a better solution than traditional plastic which can take 100 years or longer to full break down.  Additionally, PLA does not leach heavy metals or harmful toxins into the environment when burning or naturally decomposing. We believe that making reusable products with PLA will reduce significant amounts of ocean and land pollution, creating a long-term benefit for our environment and kids.

  1. Improved Durability with Plant-Based Materials: One downside of natural materials in modern life is the low durability of the product. Traditional plant-based products such as carved wood and bamboo products are either non-dishwasher friendly or shatterproof with crush impact. While earlier generations of PLA suffered from heat susceptibility and lack of durability, the newest bioplastics have made great improvements in these areas. This strengthened PLA is even more suitable for modern family life than our current bamboo fiber line as it is dishwasher-safe, microwave-safe and much less brittle compared to most of the plant-based materials.

5. Efficient Production Methods Reduce Cost: PLA is one of the very few plant-based materials that can be produced on a large scale. The injecting time is longer than petroleum plastic but is faster than other plant-based products. It doesn’t require labor-intensive work like wood carving nor does it require incredibly long machine times like bamboo fiber heat press molding. In addition to saving both human and machine labor, the production process reduces the defect rate compared to bamboo fiber molding which means less waste in production.

It’s an ever-changing world when it comes to clean technology for modern life. Miniware believes in both natural and smart solutions for our future generations. We strive to adopt the best solutions available and that’s the exact reason we think now is the best time to claim the advantages of PLA!

5 Earth and Kid-Friendly Benefits of Plastic-Free Baby Dishes

When it comes to parenting, we all want the benefits of convenience yet worry about what is best for us and our babies. There are many challenges to face when you’re a parent, from making the best wellness decisions for your child to choosing the best products to use.

It’s important to know that serving food to your children in plastic dishes could impact their health. Plastic dishes and tableware are widely available everywhere because they’re cheap and convenient, but studies are now showing that plastic dishes are just as bad for us as they are for the planet. Plastic products labeled BPA-free aren’t necessarily safe either. Studies show BPA-alternatives produce the same negative effects as BPA. BPA and its common replacements—BPS, BPF, BPAF, and diphenyl sulphone have been shown to severely impact reproductive functions in mice; not in just one generation but future generations as well!

The best way to reduce to risk to your family, especially your children, is to stop using plastic with food. If you’re skeptical of plastic-free baby dishes, we don’t blame you! When it comes to baby dishes, it’s crucial that they’re durable and easy to clean. Can plastic-free dishes really stand up to daily life as well as melamine or other plastics? Yes! Even better, they’re vastly better for the earth too.

Here are 5 great reasons to switch to plastic-free baby dishes today:

They’re a healthier alternative for babies and the whole family. Miniware dishes are made from 100% all-natural, plant-based materials. There are no harmful chemicals added during manufacturing, so you can be sure there’s no leaching of dangerous toxins into your little one’s food.

They’re durable. Plastic-free dishes are nearly as durable as plastic, able to withstand daily use by energetic toddlers. They’re perfect for indoor/outdoor use and travel. Although Miniware can crack if dropped from a height, there’s no risk of chips or shattering.

They’re easy to clean. Plastic-free dishes are even easier to clean than plasticware, which can warp even on the top rack of the dishwasher. Heat causes chemicals to leach out of plastic possibly contaminating future meals. There’s no risk of that with bamboo! Plastic-free dishes are dishwasher safe, however, using a delicate cycle and avoiding drying cycles will extend the life of your dishes.

They’re of high quality. Plastic is cheap for a reason. While some plastic dishes can last a few years, they end up looking shabby and worn quickly. Plastic is sensitive to heat too. Left out in the sun, plastic dishes can crack or warp. Miniware retains its beauty over time. While some plant-based fibers may eventually show with extended wear, they add to the natural look and charm of your dishes without impacting their use.

They’re a lot better for the planet. 18 billion pounds of plastic waste flow into our oceans every year? Or that less than a fifth of plastic is ever recycled worldwide? Plastic-free dishes are made from renewable resources like cassava, bamboo, and yam.
